Newsnight - 4 in 10 Lib Dems would reject coalition

Newsnight are carrying the results of a poll that suggests that about four in 10 Liberal Democrat voters would not have voted for them if they had known the party would enter into coalition with the Conservatives.

Whilst the Conservative voters are more positive, with 86% saying that they would have still voted for their party if they had known about the coalition.

The bad news for the Liberal Democrats continues with 60% of those polled saying that they believed that the Liberal Democrat identity had been weakened.

The interesting news for Labour is that 56% of respondents agreed that the scale of the proposed spending cuts was likely to threaten the recovery. Whilst 38% disagreed. Labour will take heart that their message has resonance with the public.

Though they also need to recognise that 64% agreed that cuts were required to balance the books. So some further work required to understand what that means.

Cuts are required, but cuts may threaten the recovery…
